Jonathan W. Smith Sr

Jonathan W. Smith is the son of Janice M. Smith and William Leonard. He was raised by his grandfather
Milan Smith and Elizabeth David. Jonathan is half Warm Springs Tribe and half Wasco Tribe.
Jonathan graduated from Madras High School in 1990 and has since worked in several capacities within
the tribal organization.
Jonathan has served his community in several capacities of leadership with local boards and
committees. They include the Warm Springs Forest Industries Board of Directors, the Warm Springs
Tribal Employment Rights Ordinance Commission, Warm Springs Community Action Team Board of
Directors, the Warm Springs Fish & Wildlife Committee (since 2004), the Land Use Planning Committee
(2013-2021), and the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission.
Jonathan has also served his community by being a ceremonial hunter and ceremonial fisherman who
provides these resources for ceremonies conducted by the tribe.
Jonathan was voted into office in 2022 and was selected to lead the 29th Tribal Council as the Chairman
and will serve in this capacity until May 2025.
In 2022 Jonathan campaigned on protecting tribal treaty rights, sovereignty & and culture, developing a
balanced economic development strategy, addressing tribal infrastructure needs, and transparent
business operations.
As the 29th Tribal Council of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs:

  • We are fighting to preserve our rights, culture, and sovereignty in all our historical lands.
  • We have developed a vision regarding sustainable balanced economic development.
  •  We are developing a long-term strategy to address our infrastructure needs for the
    community.
  •  We have worked with the tribal enterprises to develop published annual plans and have
    public meetings with the community.
